The Angelus Prayer

The Angelus is traditionally prayed in a call and response format, with a leader announcing the versicle (V) and everyone present saying the response (R).

Prayer and Exorcism of Archangel St. Michael

Given to Pope Leo XIII

Exactly 33 years to the day, before the Miracle of the Sun in Fatima, that is, on October 13, 1884, Pope Leo XIII had a remarkable vision while celebrating a Mass. He stood there for about 10 minutes as if in a trance, his face turning pale and gray. He then went to his study and composed a prayer to St. Michael the Archangel:

Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into Hell, Satan and all the other evil spirits, who prowl throughout the world, seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

When asked what had happened, he explained that he had heard two voices coming from the direction of the tabernacle. One voice was gentle and the other was rough and harsh. He heard the following conversation:

The voice of Satan boasted with his pride to our Lord, "I can destroy Your church."
The gentle voice of the Lord, "You can? Then go and do it."
Satan: "To do that, I need more time and power."
Our Lord: "How much time? How much power?"
Satan: "75-100 years, and more power over those who submit to my service."
Our Lord: "You get this time, and this power."

One of the first changes of the Second Vatican Council, was the removal of the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel in 1964. It was the 80th year of the devil.

Our Lady's Appeal

After my Rosary, you ought to pray the prayer of combat of our Prince and his exorcism, given to Pope Leo XIII, asking for the collapse of the plans of my adversary and his hosts of evil. Do not forget that he is about to reveal himself to mankind and his appearance will bring much suffering.

O Glorious Prince of the heavenly host, St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in the battle and in the terrible warfare that we are waging against the principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, against the evil spirits. Come to the aid of man, whom Almighty God created immortal, made in His own image and likeness, and redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of Satan.

Fight this day the battle of the Lord, together with the holy angels, as already thou hast fought the leader of the proud angels, Lucifer, and his apostate host, who were powerless to resist thee, nor was there place for them any longer in Heaven. That cruel, ancient serpent, who is called the devil or Satan who seduces the whole world, was cast into the abyss with his angels. Behold, this primeval enemy and slayer of men has taken courage. Transformed into an angel of light, he wanders about with all the multitude of wicked spirits, invading the earth in order to blot out the name of God and of His Christ, to seize upon, slay and cast into eternal perdition souls destined for the crown of eternal glory. These most crafty enemies have filled and inebriated with gall and bitterness the Church, the spouse of the immaculate Lamb, and have laid impious hands on her most sacred possessions. In the Holy Place itself, where the See of Holy Peter and the Chair of Truth has been set up as the light of the world, they have raised the throne of their abominable impiety, with the iniquitous design that when the Pastor has been struck, the sheep may be scattered.

Arise then, O invincible Prince, bring help against the attacks of the lost spirits to the people of God, and give them the victory. They venerate thee as their protector and patron; in thee holy Church glories as her defense against the malicious power of hell; to thee has God entrusted the souls of men to be established in heavenly beatitude. Oh, pray to the God of peace that He may put Satan under our feet, so far conquered that he may no longer be able to hold men in captivity and harm the Church. Offer our prayers in the sight of the Most High, so that they may quickly find mercy in the sight of the Lord; and vanquishing the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, do thou again make him captive in the abyss, that he may no longer seduce the nations. Consecration to The Sacred Heart of Jesus

St. Patrick's Prayer

St. Patrick's prayer for the faithful captures the wonderful spirit that made him Ireland's patron saint and one of the Church’s most beloved missionaries.

Born in Britain shortly before the 5th century, St. Patrick was taken captive to Ireland by raiders at the age of 16. He lived there for six years as a shepherd under harsh conditions and became intensely devoted to God in prayer, as he puts it, “because the spirit was then fervent within me.” Tradition has it that divine dreams inspired both his escape from captivity in Ireland and his return there later in his life as a bishop.

In this prayer he asks for God’s help in various ways:

May the Strength of God pilot us.

According to tradition, St. Patrick wrote this prayer in 433 A.D. for divine protection before successfully converting the Irish King Leoghaire and his subjects from paganism to Christianity. (The term breastplate refers to a piece of armor worn in battle.)

When St. Paul referred to putting on the “Armor of God” in his letter to the Ephesians (6:11) to fight sin and evil inclinations, he could have been thinking of prayers just like this one! We may not wear combat gear in our daily lives, but St. Patrick's Breastplate can function as divine armor for protection against spiritual adversity.

Prayers of St. Padre Pio

Padre Pio in his youth was deeply religious and early in life showed a love for recollection and for the things of God. At school, he learned diligently and possessed a lively intelligence, so much so that his father was determined to help his son financially to become a priest. In 1903, he began his novitiate with the Capuchins in Morcone, received the habit and was given the religious name of Pio (Pius, in English). After seven years of studies, he was ordained on August 10, 1910 at the age of 23. Because of delicate health, he was permitted to practice his ministry for several years in his parochial church of Pietrelcina.

In 1912, he received intermittently the invisible stigmata. Christ's sacred wounds were invisibly imprinted on his hands, feet and side. The wounds could not be seen, but the pain and swelling of them were there. In 1916, his superiors sent him to the friary in San Giovanni Rotondo. He lived there until he died.

A prayer of exorcism taught by Saint Anthony

(To pray any time of day, and defeat temptation)

Popular tradition holds that St. Anthony taught a prayer to a poor woman who sought help against the temptations of the devil. The Franciscan Pope Sixtus V had the prayer — also called “the motto of St. Anthony” — engraved into the base of the obelisk erected in St. Peter’s Square in Rome.

In the original Latin, the prayer says

Ecce Crucem Domini!
Fugite partes adversae!
Vicit Leo de tribu Juda,
Radix David! Alleluia!

And translated, it reads

Behold, the Cross of the Lord!
Begone, all evil powers!
The Lion of the tribe of Judah,
The Root of David, has conquered!
Alleluia, Alleluia!

This short prayer has the flavor of a small exorcism. We can use it too — both in Latin and in English — to be able to overcome all the temptations we face.

Prayers by St. Ignatius of Loyola

St Ignatius, with a “love of martial exercises and a vain glorious desire for fame,” joined the army at 17. He was happy to take up arms, engage in duels and, together with his leadership qualities, he became an accomplished fighter. That is until he sustained serious leg injuries when hit by a cannonball.

St Ignatius, during his convalescence, read many religious texts and resolved to devote his future life to the conversion of non-Christians, emulating St Francis of Assisi. He studied theology, was ordained a Priest and founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), becoming its first Superior General.

St Ignatius is remembered as a talented spiritual director and for his vigorous opposition to the Protestant Revolution. He is Patron Saint of the Society of Jesus, soldiers and parts of Spain. His Feast Day is the 31st July.

Lord, Teach Me

Devotion to the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ

Conscious, merciful Savior, of my nothingness and of Thy sublimity, I cast myself at Thy feet and thank Thee for the many proofs of Thy grace shown unto me, Thy ungrateful creature.

O would that my own sins, my coldness, and all the acts of disrespect I have ever committed against Thee, O Holy Precious Blood, could be undone.
Behold, O dearest Jesus, I offer to Thee the love, honor and adoration, which Thy most Holy Mother, Thy faithful disciples and all the saints have offered to Thy Precious Blood.
I ask Thee to forget my earlier faithlessness and coldness, and to forgive all who offend Thee. Sprinkle me, O Divine Savior, and all men with Thy Precious Blood, so that we, O Crucified Love, may love Thee from now on with all our hearts, and worthily honor the price of our salvation. Amen.
